Alhamdulillah, the EOP exam for Medicine has finished and I managed to pass the 2 short cases. I'm surprised by myself too. Thank God, but anyway..I'm not going to share my exam experience in this post (maybe later)
Tomorrow, I'm going to start with Short Posting which is Ophthalmology aka ophthal and I'm excited yet worry at the same time.
As the name implies, short posting is just for 2 weeks. I'm not sure how much can be learned within that short period of time. I guess i just have to make full use of the time. Because it's an ophtal posting, we are required to buy a fundoscope in order to practice. I actually plan to buy one, however since my sister told me she had one at home (which is currently nowhere to be found) I havent buy it yet. Aaargh, I really wish i could have one! She said it's a waste to buy it since she didn't use the scope in her working days anymore.
To borrow from a friend, hmm..I still feel it's better to have one of my own. And the textbooks! She said during her medical student days, her doctor recommended a good website which was just enough. There's no need for textbooks. But here in my uni, the have a list of recommended textbooks which I'm sure will not be able to finish by the time I finish the Short posting.
I think for the books, i wont be buying them since it's just for 2 weeks. I guess i have to lookup for a good web resources then. As for the scope, I'm still thinking of buying one if I havent found my sister's scope. I can always resell them to the juniors, right?

It's the end-of-posting Exam week D:
OMG, OMG, OMG!!!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarggghhhhhhhhh
I can't believe it's the exam week already. I don't really know if i've learned anything much. 2 weeks for endocrinology, 2 weeks for CNS, and 4 weeks for Cardiology, is it enough? Honestly, i dont think so. (or is it just me??) My group has to cover respiratory, ID, dermatology and rheumatology posting by ourselves. Is it enough? No! And this is the first time we are going to have short cases but they gave us 2 short cases for the exam. Is it alright? No!
How can this be alright? But, nevertheless i dont want to be stressed out by the exam. I'm just going to give my best shot as always ( and it's not the best result usually)
Today, 1 friend told me that when she came into my room she always found me holding a book in my hand implying i'm a hardworking girl and always study. And my response was, what? No, lah..sometimes i look at my laptop, sometimes i dont read the book in my hand at all and i said it was not a good way to study (am i in denial?)
Seriously, i think being hardworking and study most of the time in clinical years is NOT a good way to study. (and yet i'm doing it) The cases you might get in exam, they wont be taken from your books. It's how you apply the knowledge that matters (at least, that's the way i see it). So, a better option is to have some friends to study with you about cases in the hospital. I think it's better to learn that way because by doing so you'll know some of the important aspects of the hx that you'd missed out, the correct way to perform PE (if you do it wrongly), to interpret the findings if it tally with your hx, to think about the relevant investigations and the results that you'd expect and finally how to manage the patient.
But my problem right now is finding someone to study together (medical students tend to study alone) and to think about differetial dx and ix.
How can I overcome this?

2nd week into Cardiology
Next week's gonna be exhausting, REALLY! There'll be seminar, case discussion and multidisciplinary seminar of which i'm involved. Some of the slides are still unfinished. Well, it's a groupwork and i think it's much better if my group can sit together and finish it off in one go (it'll be easier to ask for their opinion etc) Since we have to include a case example, i think 2 brains are better than 1 isn't it? I really don't want to be bothered by this since there's no use for me to think about it alone (it's a groupwork remember?) And not to mention the case summaries..yes, the never ending case summaries! If i think about all of them, i'll be stressed..hence, the purpose of going back home.
I don't know what's going to happen. Exam's are coming in 3 weeks time. I dont think i'm prepared.
I hope i can find a sparing partner, just like how my seniors did. For me, it's much easier to study together than studying alone because you know, there are times that you feel so down, unmotivated to study and this where the sparing partner come in.
Hoping to find one soon~

2nd week into Endocrinology
Thank God, i'm already in the 2nd week in Endocrinology which is the final week for this sub-posting. I have to admit, learning Endocrinology is much more interesting than our previous Medical posting back in 3rd year. (Probably because I dont really care what I'm doing as long as I pass and because back then everything seems so broad, and it really is!) And to my surprise, I am now less timid to ask questions that bothered my mind boldly to the lecturers. BOLDLY.
Anyway, what I'm going to jot down today was one of the many experiences that I have in the ward.
Today we have a short case on a diabetic foot. The patient was having diabetes and have been taking meds since 2004. His feet were hyperpigmented on the dorsum, less hair, callus on the first head of metatarsus with left amputated big toe. Peripheral pulses were palpable and there was pedal edema up to his knee. Okay, since the lecturer chose this patient as he is a good case, I decided to write his case for my first write-up.
When we finally had the time to clerk him, he looked very cooperative. (Eventhough he got wired up with nasal prong, IVD, and urine drainage bag at the end of the bed) So, our clerking session began until in the middle of the session that he got irritated ( I think so as he began to raise his voice a little bit). It's embarrassing, I have to admit as the cubicle contained 3 other beds including his so when he spoke louder surely other patients would have heard him belittling me. I really asked frank questions, and i only need a frank answers. But because of different perception about something the session got pretty irritating for me! Yes, irritating! I am asking very nicely to this patient, yet he treated me like I am a kid. (I do have a young face though) Right then, I change my style of clerking him. I asked him in a sarcastic, non-chalant manner. Even my tone changed! As we finished clerking him, I quickly leave his bed to calm myself! Thank you, Mr Patient. You really made my day! I'm so not going to write about you.
Dr Z was right. The challenge of a doctor is to remain interested in other people problems. And in my case, I dont want to be interested about him anymore.
